Security Doesn’t Come From a Scared Populace
Bruce Schneier, Founder and CTO of Counterpane comments in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that public statements made by the Department of Homeland Security - vague, indeterminate, and unspecific - generates widespread fear and uncertainty but does not make us any safer.
This Is A Bit Troubling
Memory Hole reports Justice Department Censors Supreme Court. Seems Justice does not want the public to read parts of SJC decisions in order to protect “national security.”
Increase in Government Secrets At A Cost of $6.5 Billion
Forty agencies of the federal government (excluding the CIA) created 14 million new classified documents in fiscal year 2003. This is a 26 percent increase over the number of documents cassified as secret in 2002, and a 60 percent increase over 2001. (Source: Openthegovernment.org )
