Stephen Hawking On Earth’s Future
“First of all, I believe that life on Earth is at an ever increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus, or other dangers. I think the human race has no future if it doesn’t go into space. I therefore want to encourage public interest in space.”
Erosion of Constitutional Freedoms
Naomi Wolf sounds a not so subtle warning regarding the erosion of Constitutional freedoms and the subsequent limitations on our open society.
She observes that it is best for Americans to look more closely at aspects of recent legislation (USA Patriot Act limits on civil liberties; the Military Commissions Act of 2006 in which the president has the power to call any US citizen an “enemy combatant”; the John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 gave the president new powers over the national guard), the use of private security contractors, the establishment of military tribunals and use of detention centers situated in legal “outer space”, and attempts to control the press and pollute the news well with fake news and false documents.
